Mermaid Mint Julep
If there’s a party with hats involved, I’m in. And, of course, a cocktail…
The “Greatest Two Seconds in Sports” is also the greatest homage to the bygone days of the statement hat. I think we should all wear hats and fascinators more often (for the love of drama). I owe my obsession with hats to my grandma who took her hat wearing very seriously. A little bit competitive and a little bit spectacle, she was all style. And the classic Mint Julep has gotten just as competitive and just as spectacular.
So, I give you, my take on the classic. It’s all about the ice. Go big or go home, so I went bigger…I made mint, and simple syrup ice cubes!
And it turned out “spectacularly!” Try it at home, here’s how:
Mermaid Mint Julep
Simple Syrup + Fresh Mint + Water and Freeze
Bourbon
Garnish with Fresh Mint (remember, it’s all about the spectacle ?)
Muddle fresh mint leaves into a shaker with the simple syrup then add water. Shake and pour into ice cube molds. I used about a 2 tsp of simple syrup (generously) and about 4 mint leaves to every ½ cup of water. Below I even added full mint leaves to King Cube ice molds for added drama. (Again, go big.) Add your favorite Kentucky Bourbon. Enjoy!
This is my new favorite way to serve a Mint Julep. And the King Cube version was killer. I think it’s going to be a hit on Saturday!
Get your ice molds going now and let me know how it goes.
